What shortens its life is a bad install: foam sprayed too thick in one pass, applied over a damp or dirty substrate, or used to bury a leak nobody found first. That is why we inspect for active water intrusion before quoting. Foam over an unresolved leak hides the problem instead of solving it.
It depends on the scope. Only when it is compromised. Insulation contaminated by rodents, wet from a roof leak, or compressed into a mat has lost its value and comes out. Dry intact loose-fill that is simply too shallow can usually stay in place with new material added on top, which saves the removal cost entirely.
For reaching a depth target in an accessible attic, blown insulation costs less per unit of R-value. For sealing air leaks at the ceiling plane, foam does something blown insulation cannot. Most attics here are best served by using each one for the job it is efficient at rather than picking a side.
