Foam that was installed wrong does not quietly underperform the way a thin batt does. It stays bonded to the framing, and whatever went wrong stays with it. We get called for removal in a few recurring situations. Foam applied over a wet or dirty substrate that never bonded and is now pulling away in sheets. Foam sprayed too thick in one pass, which can cure unevenly and leave soft or shrunken material behind. Foam applied over an unresolved leak, where the water kept coming and the foam simply hid it until the framing underneath told the story. And occasionally foam installed in the wrong place entirely, most often a vapor-impermeable layer on the interior side of a wall that already had a vapor retarder, which traps moisture inside the cavity. Removal is genuinely labor-intensive work. Cured foam is mechanically bonded to the wood and comes off in pieces, which is why anyone quoting removal cheaply has not looked at the job. The first thing we do is establish why the existing foam failed, because reinstalling correctly over a cause nobody identified produces the same outcome a second time at full price.
We assess adhesion, cure condition, and the substrate underneath, then quote extraction and reinstallation separately so you can see the split. Containment goes up before extraction starts. After the material is out we photograph the exposed framing, document any water damage or rot found behind it, and confirm the source is resolved before anything new is applied. Closed-cell foam is denser, carries a higher R-value per inch, and resists liquid water and vapor drive. Open-cell foam is lighter, more flexible, cheaper per board foot, and better at damping sound. What shortens its life is a bad install: foam sprayed too thick in one pass, applied over a damp or dirty substrate, or used to bury a leak nobody found first. It depends on the scope. Insulation work that is part of a larger permitted project, or that touches the building envelope during a remodel, routes through the Kent Permit Center and its Citizen Portal under Economic and Community Development. Cured foam bonds mechanically to wood, so extraction is a mechanical process and some surface scoring of the framing is normal. Structural damage is not. What we look for during removal is damage that was already there under the foam, which is often the reason it came out in the first place. We photograph the framing once it is exposed.
That depends entirely on what the foam is doing. Foam that underperforms but is dry and bonded may be worth leaving in place and supplementing. Foam that is hiding an active leak or trapping moisture against framing is costing you more every season it stays. We assess which situation you are in and say so plainly.
Usually, and it is the better sequence because the substrate is already exposed and inspected. We quote removal and reinstallation as separate line items so you can see the cost of each. If the assessment shows the assembly should not have foam at all, we will tell you what it should have instead.
